What You Need

  • Your DD-214 (discharge papers) showing Navy service during the relevant era
  • A diagnosis of mesothelioma, asbestosis, or asbestos-related lung cancer from a licensed physician

What to Expect

  • The VA reviews the claim and assigns a disability rating (mesothelioma is generally rated 100%).
  • Decisions commonly take 6–18 months, though serious illnesses like mesothelioma may be expedited.
  • There is no statute of limitations — a claim can be filed at any time after diagnosis.
  • Survivors may separately qualify for DIC benefits.

Don’t Overlook the Separate Civil Claim
