USS Kirk (FF-1087), a Knox class ocean escort frigate, was commissioned at Todd Shipyards in San Pedro, California in September 1972 and served in the Pacific Fleet. Kirk became one of the most celebrated Navy ships of the Vietnam War era when her crew, under Commander Paul Jacobs, participated in the dramatic evacuation of South Vietnamese refugees and South Vietnamese Navy ships during the fall of Saigon in April 1975. Kirk escorted a flotilla of South Vietnamese vessels carrying thousands of refugees to safety. Kirk subsequently deployed to the Western Pacific conducting Cold War operations.
