USS Franklin (CV-13) was an Essex-class aircraft carrier commissioned in January 1944 that served in the Pacific War, earning four battle stars and participating in major campaigns including the Mariana Islands, Palau, Formosa Air Battle, and Leyte Gulf. Severely damaged in a March 1945 Japanese dive bomber attack that killed 807 crew members, she returned to the mainland for repairs and missed the remainder of the war. Decommissioned in 1947 and never modernized for active service, Franklin was sold for scrap in 1966.
