USS Ranger (CVA-61), the third Forrestal-class supercarrier and first U.S. carrier built from the outset with an angled flight deck, was commissioned in August 1957 and operated primarily from Alameda, California. She deployed extensively to the Western Pacific and served throughout the Vietnam War, earning 13 battle stars for sustained combat operations against North Vietnam from 1964 to 1972. Decommissioned in 1993 after 36 years of service, she was scrapped in November 2017 following storage and relocation to a dismantling facility in Brownsville, Texas.
